Mad in America affiliate, Mad in Norway, is hosting an international film festival from September 24-26 in Lillehammer, Norway. Each week, we will feature a film. This week is Drop of Sunshine.

The story of Reshma Valliappan and her journey of eventual triumph over schizophrenia. Embodying a controversial and contrarian view towards recovery, it proposes that the only treatment that can work is the one wherein the ‘patient’ is encouraged and empowered to become an equal partner in the process of healing.
Summary
This high-quality Indian production combines documentary storytelling with artistic elements such as dramatization, music, drawings, and text to portray the life of Reshma. Reshma is a young woman who, in her early twenties, suddenly develops severe symptoms and is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The film introduces her as a highly creative and unconventional individual who strongly asserts her independence and her right to define her own place in the world.
Initially, her parents seek help within the traditional psychiatric system, but neither Reshma nor her family feel that a life centered on medication is a sustainable or fulfilling solution. The film follows her journey as she explores alternative and more holistic approaches to coping with her experiences. Over time, she learns to relate to her voices differently, eventually embracing her condition as a source of creativity rather than solely a limitation.
